I was attending a Christmas folk-music concert in a small auditorium, and noticed the wife of one of the band members watching her husband with an expression of great love, pride and tenderness. At the same time, I noticed that behind her stood the statue of a lion, expressing, to me, the qualities of power, truth and light (notice he is holding a torch). It occurred to me, in a flash, that behind the gentle love of the wife was this unseen power of Divine Love, and I managed to capture something of this juxtaposition on film.
This photograph has always fascinated me because you can barely see her face at the angle I took the photograph, and yet the tiny bit you can see speaks volumes. Once in the touchup process I recall I spotted just the tiniest portion of the corner of her eye, and the effect was immediately lost, so I left it alone. That gave me instant respect for portrait painters who are able to capture the essence of a person.
